How not to love Romania, after you read “Isvor” [Marthe Bibesco’s book “Isvor, Land of Willows”]? It was my favorite lecture over an entire year and I will always reread it with the same delight and tenderness. In “Izvor”, the author’s intuition of a great poet managed to establish one of the most profound human continuities. And what a joy she had when she discovered it right in the soul of her nation!

It was Marthe’s Romanian masterpiece, where she brilliantly conveyed the everyday life and customs of her people, the extraordinary mixture of superstition, deep philosophy, resignation and hope.
